Cash: Contributions, both small and large, are what keeps the Land Trust going. Donations can be made online via the donation link or mail your check to 178 Four Mill Road, West Hartford, CT 06107.
Land: There are three options for giving land to the Land Trust all with the donor benefiting from significant tax advantages. If this is an option that you would like to learn more about we encourage you to contact us via email or Facebook. It is always important to consult with your own tax advisor prior to making a gift of real estate.

Land Donation: Some properties have been given to the Land Trust as an outright gift, some during the donor’s life time, while others are written in the donor’s will. This method gives the title of the land away, but the donor can specify restrictions as to its future use. The other method is a delayed gift, which permits a lifetime of use of the property to the owner or heirs.
Conservation Easement: This allows the donor to retain ownership of their property while also protecting their land from any development in the future. A legal agreement is put into effect that states permitted and prohibited uses of property. Often times conservation easements will yield income tax benefits to landowners and potential reduced property taxes.
Bargain of Sale: This is the selling of land to the Land Trust at a price that is less than the fair market value. Making it feasible for the Land Trust to afford to purchase the property while providing tax benefits to the donor as well.
The West Hartford Land Trust relies solely on volunteers who are passionate about the outdoors; There is no paid staff. Fiscal donations are important to get things started, but it is we as a community who make our goals a reality. There is always something for everyone to do, no matter what their skills and availability. From trail maintenance, to fundraising assistance, or creating new signs and pamphlets—the possibilities are endless. Perhaps you have a special skill you could utilize to help out the land trust!
